An interview with Christopher Perreault

What outdoor activity is your passion?
Spending time with my family. My outdoor passion is driven by my wife Emily, and our 3 kids, Klayten 13, Emara 11, and Evelia 3. As a family, we cover everything outdoors from beaches, rivers, lakes, forests, mountain tops and more. We do it all ranging from whitewater kayaking and river surfing, mountain biking, climbing, snowboarding, skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, indoor climbing, and more.

How did you get involved in that activity, and how old were you when you started?
I have always been active since I was little. Growing up in northern Minnesota and North Dakota I traveled across the U.S. and Canada with my sister and parents. I met Emily and in 2004 we started mountain climbing. Once the kids came along it just felt natural to get them outdoors and explore.

What was the most epic trip you’ve ever taken?
Hard choice, whitewater kayaking with Marty Colbert and professional athlete Hannah Ray J in 32-degree water and -17 wind chill or hiking up Wheeler Peak in New Mexico with hiking guru, Timothy Buck for three days of snowboarding and ice climbing. Last, maybe our family 4-day kayak and camp and hike trip of the Apostle Islands.

What is the most important piece of gear in your pack? (other than AKU footwear, of course!)
Life Straw has been a great resource when you hike as a family of five. Second would be duct tape, it seems like it can be used for anything from cups, bandages, splinting, funnel, equipment repair or making a hat, it is a must have!

Where do you hope your AKUs will take you in the future?
Klayten says Alaska, Emara says Fiji, and Evie says wherever there are marshmallows. Emily and I plan on Ireland, Greece, and possibly Italy again. Another canoe trip in the Boundary Waters or a trip to Galapagos? Great boots make portages carrying packs and canoes a lot easier.

What AKU boots are you currently wearing?
Zenith GTX, and Trekker Lite 2 GTX.
