An interview with Matt Mosteller

- What outdoor activity is your passion?
- My passion is to get people outside. Not only for the healthy benefits of movement but for the soul-filled calm that one can gain from spending time in Nature. This stepping outside does more than move us but it can transform us. Creating a social community taking steps outside is goodness and joy for the human spirit. Hiking, backpacking long trails is my jam.
- How did you get involved in that activity, and how old were you when you started?
- As I was a very fat kid growing up and fortunately a very kind ski instructor gave me wings. This opened my world to the power of nature. Kick-starting a love for the outdoors. Tackling sections of the Pacific Crest Trail as a young kid, to multi-day backpack journeys and adventures in the Canadian Rockies. It saved my life.
- What was the most epic trip you’ve ever taken?
- From multi day backpacking trips in the trail-less region of Northern British Columbia, to adventure hiking in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia outside the community of Kimberley, BC. So many great summer adventures but a few are stamped into my soul. From nearly freezing to death above the Arctic Circle, to being rescued from a crevice deep in the ice of the Canadian Rockies, to escaping a charging Grizzly Bear on skis. I am truly grateful for all who I get to spend time with.
- What is the most important piece of gear in your pack? (other than AKU footwear, of course!)
- Tools for survival - shelter (MSR tent), Protection from weather (Outdoor Research jacket/pants), proper tools for travel (AKU for earth and Rossignol for snow), Backpack (Gregory Packs) for long journeys, backpacking & hiking, Bear Spray, fire starter, avalanche safety gear (transceiver, shovel and probe & regular practice with each).
- Where do you hope your AKUs will take you in the future?
- Long trails, many more long trails. Mountain tops. Support for when the trail is easy and for when it is long and tough. Dependable. Tough. Comfortable. Performance. I have some epics planned and my trusty boots will be taking me away.
- What AKU boots are you currently wearing?
- Long trails, many more long trails. Mountain tops. Support for when the trail is easy and for when it is long and tough. Dependable. Tough. Comfortable. Performance. I have some epics planned and my trusty boots will be taking me away.
