Like the light weight relative to my Mammut boots, which are my mainstay for hiking (own 2 pairs). Wanted lighter weight boots I could wear all day, without weight pressure on my ankles, particularly when sitting cross-legged. Ordered size 12.5, same size as my Mammuts. These run larger. Wanted to exchange them for size 12, but AKU was out of stock. Decided to keep them and try to make them work, since I liked the look and weight of the boots. Most lighter weight boots I've looked at are either Sneaker-type or poorer construction. AKU Alterra Lite Mid seems very well constructed, although not as high on my ankles as my Mammut Mids. The biggest problem with these boots are the heels, which are constructed too wide. This results in heel slippage when walking, and which made me want to return them. Also, the provided insoles give no support, and I've replaced them with Powerstep Original insoles. (I've had to do this with many boots I've owned). Regarding the heels, I have added heel pads, therefore narrowing the heel opening, and eliminating most of the slippage.
I would rank them higher if they redesigned the heel section of the boots. My Mammuts will continue to be my long hike boots. I'll use these AKUs for short hikes, and for longer day usage. I do like the roomy toe box of these boots.
Solid hiker, very comfortable. My only gripe is the soles are wearing pretty quick, had them for 5 months and the outer tread is already worn down. I don’t think they’ll last the year, which is disappointing considering the price. However, they are still a great shoe and I’ll probably still purchase another pair when the time comes. I would love if they made a hot weather, non GTX, non waterproof version of this shoe, I would be a customer for life!
My 3rd pair of aku boots, all fit good, will buy no other brand.
