To get the appropriate fit for the best performance we recommend ordering a 1/2 size smaller from your normal AKU boot size.
DESIGNED TO GO FROM TRAIL TO ROCK WITH PRECISION AND COMFORT
The DFS Rock collection uses a ground breaking Dual Fit System (“DFS”) to give you both maximum comfort during your approach and high performance fit while climbing and scrambling. The Rock DFS has two separate lace zones that utilize lightweight webbing that wraps around and under your foot which enables you to customize your shoe for the fit you want. The Rock DFS midsole incorporates a lightweight EVA foam for cushioning and a polyurethane heel for durability and support. The midsole is then wrapped with sticky climbing rubber to protect your shoe and to provide extra grip. Together with a Vibram Approcciosa sole with Megagrip, the resulting Rock DFS offers a high-performance approach shoe for all day comfort.
DUAL FIT SYSTEM
AKU's DFS collection of approach shoes allows for optimum enjoyment and maximum confidence over the most demanding terrain. Whether you're on flat trails or going vertical, AKU DFS shoes will take you there in comfort.
The VIBRAM Approach sole is designed to make quick work of trails while giving also giving you the confidence to edge and smear on your climb.

This is my first ever pair of AKU. The AKU DFS men is well built, a little on the heavy side and not as much cushion as what I was accustomed to with the Hoka Speedgoat trail running shoes. The inner sole is very thin and was replaced with a Superfeet insole which gives more arch support. For me, it does required some break in period since the shoe is a bit firmer than what I am used to.
The DFS sole and tread patterns provides tons of traction and side to side stability on ascent and descent over rocks and loose dirt on slick rock. Have not tried wet condition yet since we dont have any rain here. The rubber guard around the shoes gives extra protection against rocks. Have not needed to tighten the lower laces on descent yet mainly because my left foot feels numb under the ball of the feet. I do wish the DFS come in a wide for men. The 12.5 may gives a little more width. The tongue is comfortable and don't move while you hike. The black lace is a bit short when using the lower holes to snug up the heel. My foot is very well supported all around and feel very secure/confident on the descent with good side to side support. The vibram sole is holding up well on the black rubber but the orange part is already showing sign of wear after 4 short 7 miles hike on the outer heels. The black color attracts a lot of dirt and is a little harder to clean than a light green or a blue.
Overall it is a great shoe. I normally wear size 10.5 street shoes and went with size 12 AKU DFS men. My 4 wishes would be a wider forefoot, a little more cushion under the forefoot, a more durable sole especially on the outer heel and a little lighter weight.
That’s why I bought 3 more pairs. To last me years to come. My first pair have lasted well over a year and still not worn out .
Starting 3 months ago, I started looking for a good, low-cut hiker that would fit my slightly wider than normal feet. I ended up purchasing 4 different sets of shoes from different companies, trying each on for an hour or so then switching, and while each had something good about them, ultimately none of them fit well. There was always a slight squeeze or pinch on my right foot. For 2 weeks I emailed back and forth with Patricia the AKU rep in Canada and she did all she could to help get info from the maker in Italy, but I still had to bite the bullet and purchase a pair and try them on and compare them with the others. To my amazement, the DFS regular size 10 fit better than all the others, even the Vasque Breeze AT 10 wide. Part of the problem has been that the few companies that make wide sizes have had their stock emptied after what's now been 2 years of COVID, but even companies like KEEN and Merrell seem to run smaller than the W designation given them.
What I can confidently say is that AKU's sizing system, which follows the regular 'D' shoe sizing system, fits well, as the mondo size is slightly bigger than normal...making it a blessing for people like me.
My new DFS are amazingly comfortable and the 2 lace system is great for tightening up part of the shoe without restricting where it might pinch. Out of the box, they not only fit well, but are supple and don't need a lot of work to break them in. Also of special note, is that the orthotic insoles that come with the shoes are great; most companies seem to be cheaping out in this area to save costs. To have a good insert come with the shoe is a money saver.
This is my 1st pair of AKU, but definitely won't be my last.
